New Congress Takes Lessons from Democratic Governors

Among the priorities of House Democratic leaders when they take control in January is an increase in the minimum wage. That’s old hat to some of their colleagues at the state level: Two dozen states have already approved minimum wage hikes that are higher than federal law. Much of the domestic agenda for the new Democratic Congress, in fact, reflects issues that Democratic governors and state legislatures have been working on throughout the Bush administration. Frustrated by the opposition of the White House and GOP congressional leaders to initiatives on stem cell research, environmental protection, access to health care and climate change, a growing number of states have been taking action on their own. Democratic Governors Call for Stem Cell Research

As the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2005 (HR 810) heads for a congressional showdown with the Bush administration, Governors Ruth Ann Minner of Delaware, Rod Blagojevich of Illinois, Tom Vilsack of Iowa, Jennifer Granholm of Michigan, Jon Corzine of New Jersey, Ted Kulongoski of Oregon, Bill Richardson of New Mexico and Jim Doyle of Wisconsin urged passage of what they called an important health care initiative. “Stem cell research holds the potential to cure some of humanity’s oldest and deadliest diseases – from Parkinson’s to Alzheimer’s to multiple sclerosis and cancer. President Bush’s restrictions have delayed that research for far too long. The Senate has a vital opportunity this week to do the right thing so the science can go forward. That opportunity must not be squandered,” the Governors wrote.
